The Church Steeple
Did you ever hear this little rhyme?
Here's the church, and here's the steeple
Open the doors and see all the people.
Here's a baker's dozen cool steeples. And a few explanations of why churches have steeples.
1 - To direct the eyes of the congregation ready to enter to the heavens and God.
2 - To house a bell tower and ring the bell when it was time for worship, which everyone could from miles around.
3 - In early colonial days the steeple could be used as a lookout tower in case of an attack, and from some designs I'm thinking riflemen could position themselves like a turret in a castle.
4 - And Architectural historian, Professor John A. Kramer, explains, “The steeple adds a vertical accent to the overall design, enriching the visual experience and providing a sense of completeness and harmony.”
Whatever purpose they serve it cannot be denied that they certainly make a house of worship stand out in the community.
